Pond Maintenance Services

At the Water’s Edge LLC, we are committed to managing water gardens in the most environmentally responsible way. As we see it, these water gardens are our luxury items. They are not something we need, but something we want. We need to be stewards of our yards. This is our piece of the earth.

We carefully select water treatment products with the least environmental impact so if they leach out of the water garden or if wildlife use the water, there will be no danger. For instance, we will not throw harsh chemicals in the pond for a quick fix or to kill algae. We will select beneficial, usually slower acting products like bacteria and barley, and mechanical means like skimming, cleaning, and “weeding” by hand.

As stewards, we will not waste water each year by draining the pond. We will test and then determine if it is necessary. We also encourage composting the sludge and organics taken from the pond. We continue to look for more sustainable features, like edible water plants and diverting rain water as a refill source. Wouldn’t it be nice if we set up our water pumps to operate on direct current from a solar PV collector? These are sustainability issues that we would like to further address in the future.

There is more to the well-balanced system than meets the eye. We consider the bio-filtration, skimmer activity, water flow and oxygenation, rocks, plants, fish, volume, location, and weather. All of these are managed to ensure the stability of your water garden year after year.

Our comprehensive Stewardship Plan:

Opening, closing and all routine maintenance in between. Service is scheduled every 7 to 14 days from April through October. We schedule servicing so that you have a healthy, aesthetically pleasing pond all season long. This includes evaluating water quality, draining if necessary, skimming debris, cleaning biofilters and pump filters, maintaining pumps, resetting edging and waterfalls for minor leaks and aesthetics, fixing small leaks in the liner, trimming, repotting and fertilizing plants, rinsing skimmer net and pads, netting and setting up the pond for winter. All water treatment products are included in this plan including water tests, bacteria, sludge digester, phosphate control, buffers, pond salt, ph adjusters, barley extract and similar products.

Cheryl McCormickCheryl McCormick, Former Owner

Water’s Edge, LLC was started in 2001 by Cheryl McCormick.

Cheryl had created and installed a water garden in her yard so that she could enjoy water with its inherent beauty, relaxing movement, and natural soundscape while sitting nearby indoors or outside.

Backed up with her biology/ecology degree she discovered how a small system like a water garden has physical and chemical characteristics similar to a natural lake ecosystem. It was fun to work with the artificial system to create a biologically balanced aquatic habitat. This experience with a single pond led to assisting many other home owners with water garden maintenance issues.

At the end of 2018 Cheryl sold Water’s Edge to Laura Cook who will continue helping pond owners all over Northwest Ohio and South East Michigan.
